First Duty - to develop a good character.
- To be honest, trustworthy etc
- To be kind, considerate, and have kind thoughts etc
- To show gratitude
- To be a good parent
- To be a good wife or husband
- To be a good citizen
- To be a good employee/employer
- To respect people
- To respect nature, animals and the environment
Second duty - to repay the debt.
It is as if we take out a loan, from society, when we are born, and we must repay it during our lifetime.Clearly we cannot repay parents, teachers and in particular strangers directly, but we repay society by doing the same things for others.
- We must repay society for all the time and trouble our parents took to raise us.
- We must repay society for all the people that ever helped us, friends, teachers and even strangers
- Thus we repay our parents by raising children of our own
- We repay our teachers by teaching others, and we repay strangers by helping other strangers
Third duty - to find and fulfil our destiny.
Throughout our life we must keep a look out for what our life’s mission is, and hope that we find it, and are able to fulfil it, before it is too late.
- Everyone is different, so everyone has something different that they must do with their life, and no one else can tell them what it is.
- We usually get some clues about our life’s mission, especially when we are young and impressionable.
We usually get clues by thinking of events which strike us as being unusual, but only unusual for us. Later when we think of all these things, some sort of pattern begins to emerge, and this is the starting point. It is a bit like playing the children’s game of pass-the-parcel, where, as time goes by, it becomes easier to guess what is inside.- As we think about it more we become more sensitive to other clues and this helps us to narrow the definition of what our life’s mission really is.
As we do something about it, although it may leave us feeling drained, we find it rewarding and from time to time we get feelings confirming we are doing the right thing.[© Martin, 1996 April, 478 words, revision 070514 ]
